About Interlaken
Interlaken is a picturesque Swiss town in the canton of Bern with an area of 4.4 square kilometres. It is located in the floodplain between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The name “Interlaken” comes from the Latin “Inter LacÅ«s”, which translates as “between two lakes”. The town is surrounded by the high peaks of the Swiss Alps, the most notable of which are the Harder Kulm in the north and the Heimwehfluh in the south. It also offers a wonderful view of three mountain peaks: the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
What to do in Interlaken
Visit the Alpine Botanical Garden. It is home to over 650 species alpine flora that grow on Switzerland’s mountain hills. Not far from Interlaken on the northeast shore of Lake Thun you will find famous caves of St. Beatus. Local legend talks about a terrible dragon that used to live there and terrify people. One day, an Irish monk named Beatus defeated the dragon. Today the caves of St. Beatus lead deep into the bowels of the Niederhorn mountain range. The trail is more than a kilometre long and is electrically lit, so visitors can easily walk through the narrow corridors. You can see caves with stalactites and stalagmites and enjoy the beauty of the underground waterfall located within.
Try the rack railway leading to the Schynige Platte. The place is famous for its stunning panorama. There you will be able to view Brienz and Thun Lakes, as well as Interlaken itself. The three famous peaks – Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau – will appear as if they were on the palm of your hand!
If you like theatre, you should visit the William Tell Open Air Theatre. Every year they enact the story of “William Tell” by the German writer Friedrich Schiller. The tradition goes back to 1912 and has drawn crowds of spectators every year since. Just imagine: In 1995 the company staged its 1,000th performance, and today they have staged over 1,250 productions with an audience of over 2 million people.
