About Frankfurt
Frankfurt is one of Europe’s main business and financial centres. It is home to the headquarters of the European Bank and the German Stock Exchange. The Rothschild family started building its international banking empire in Frankfurt. Annual book, automobile, and computer fairs attract millions of tourists every year. Frankfurt is an ultra-modern city with excellent infrastructure and skyscrapers. Its historic appearance was practically lost in the bombing campaigns of the Second World War.
What to do in Frankfurt
Being the financial capital Frankfurt is renowned for its collections of world-class masterpieces. Due to the large concentration of galleries, the main promenade of the city is called the Museum Quay.
Visit the Städel Museum. Its famous collection reflects 700 years of history and European art from the beginning of the 14th century to the present day. The museum was founded more than 200 years ago by a bequest from the successful Frankfurt banker Städel.
Go to see Goethe House. It is the building where Goethe spent 25 years of his life. The interior has been reconstructed in detail. The famous artists work ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther’ was created here.
Another attraction is St Bartholomew’s Cathedral. The largest religious structure in Frankfurt, built between the 14th and 15th centuries. It is a beautiful Gothic building with a tall 95-metre-high tower. 30 Holy Roman Emperors were chosen here and 10 crowned.
One more landmark worth to be seeing is the Old Opera House. A splendid Renaissance building decorated with numerous statues. Except for the modern technical rooms, it is an exact copy of a war-ravaged architectural masterpiece. At the Old Opera House, citizens and visitors to the metropolis come to see more than just classical performances. Rock and pop stars often perform here too.
