About Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence is an amazing little town in France not far from Marseille. It has an elegance that reflects its noble heritage. It is known as the ‘City of Counts’ because during many years it was home to the Counts of Provence.  Aix-en-Provence has some impressive old noble palaces. There are also hundreds of fountains which is the reason why Aix-en-Provence is also called the “City of a Thousand Fountains”.

What to do in Aix-en-Provence

When visiting Aix-en-Provence, the best place to start is in the area known as the Old Town. There, you can admire the town’s old bell tower, built in the 16th century, which has a unique astronomical watch.

Take a walk The Boulevard Mirabeau, the largest street in Aix-en-Provence. This street schematically divides the city into the modern part and the old town. It hosts large-scale parades during important city events, and features popular cafes and boutiques.

You should definitely see some of the city’s fountains, many of which are quite remarkable. Some of these include the fountain of the four dolphins in the Mazarin Quarter, designed by Jean-Claude Rambaud. But also the fountains lining the central boulevard, the Cours Mirabeau. There is also a natural hot water fountain (34° C) covered in moss that dates to the Romans. One of the largest is the monumental fountain “de la Rotonde” featuring three giant statues representing art, justice, and agriculture.

Visit the Granet Museum with its unique collections of paintings, archaeology and sculpture including paintings of Paul Cézanne, who lived in Aix-en-Provence. You can even see the church where the famous painter was baptised – the Church of St Madeleine. Inside the church there is an altar decorated with rock crystal and an 18th-century organ.

Paule Cezanne’s Atelier or Atelier de Cezanne where the famous painter lived and worked for the last few years, has survived to this day as well. The house itself has hardly been renovated since the artist’s death, so it is not in its best condition. However, the house still gives the feeling that the great painter has just finished painting his next masterpiece and went out for a breath of fresh air.

Don’t leave the city without visiting one more landmark – Tapestry Museum. Exposition presented in former archbishop’s palace. It is not big but it is impressive.
