About Smart

This joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and SMH (Swatch watch manufacturer) started in 1994, however production would only start in 1998. Mercedes’ 1993 ‘eco-sprinter’ concept was the precursor to the first Smart car. These city-dwelling cars are known the world around for their small, compact size and fun design cues. The name Smart is a contraction of “Swatch Mercedes ART”. The companies chose the name to underline the partnership between the German car brand and the Swiss watch manufacturer.

The Smart logo is a “C” with a yellow arrow in front. The “C” illustrates the Smart cars small size as it stands for “Compact”. Furthermore, the yellow arrow in front of the “C” denotes the forward thinking arising for the company’s innovative approach.
