About Renault

Renault, the French automaker, has over 120 of history. Louis Renault along with brothers Marcel and Fernand founded the “Société Renault Frères” in 1899. This company would later be known as Renault. The company sold its first vehicle, the Renault Voiturette 1CV, to friend of Louis’ father. In 1905, Renault saw its first big order. The “Société Automobile de Place » ordered AG1 cars to create a fleet of taxis. During WWI, Renault diversified in order to help the war effort. The company started making ammunition as well as tanks and other heavy machinery. During WWII, despite France being occupied, Renault refused to build tanks for the German, focusing on producing trucks instead.

Over the course of the 20^th century, Renault produced many iconic vehicles. The famous Renault 5, a small hatchback, could be ordered in a powerful turbocharged variant. The Renault Espace, the first tried and true minivan, paved the way for other manufacturers in the family car segment. Yet another popular model is the Renault Clio which debuted in 1990 and is currently in its 5^th generation.

Did You Know?

Renault won what is considered to be the first Grand Prix at the Le Mans in 1906. The car that won was the Renault AK 90CV with Ferenc Szisz at the wheel.

To celebrate the ten years of their Espace Minivan, Renault built a special version of the model. An 800hp F1 engine with a sequential gearbox served as the car’s powertrain and carbon fiber was used for the body panels. This family van could go from 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 300+ km/h!
