About Fiat

Giovanni Agnelli founded FIAT Automobiles S.p.A with the help of a group of investors in 1899. The name is an acronym for ‘Fabrica Italiana Automobili Torino’. Fiat became the Italian leader in vehicle mass production as of 1910 and has led ever since.

Fiat is one of only car brands to live through three different centuries. Their first car was built in 1899. Fiat called it the Fiat 4 and, as the name suggests, had 4 horsepower (4.2 hp to be exact).

Fiat used to have a testing circuit on the roof of their factory, named the “Lingotto”building , in Torino. The Lingotto building, inaugurated in 1923, became the largest car factory at the time. The factory and track were in use until the 1970’s when Fiat’s expanding operations outgrew them. Today the factory serves chiefly as Fiat’s administrative headquarters.
